A product with an IP54 rating is protected against dust ingress sufficient enough to keep the product operating normally, but not completely dust tight. The product is fully protected against solid objects and splashing of water from any angle.
It is often confusing for an engineer to know what type of rating they require when they're looking for a “waterproof” touchscreen solution. Much like with watches and other electronics, there is a big difference between waterproof, water resistant, and other descriptive, but not specific, labels.
To help out, there are several rating systems that have been developed and several testing agencies that verify the results. Among these, the two best known are NEMA and IP. We will cover the IP system here.
Ingress Protection
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It is a rating that describes the protection a fitting has from intrusion of solid and liquid material. The letters IP are always followed by 2 numbers; the first refers to intrusion by solids (1-6) and the second refers to intrusion by liquids (1-8).
IP 54 is a grading usually marked on products that are to be used in extreme conditions (outdoor). The IP rating of any product specifies how resistant the device is to foreign objects and moisture. IP: IP Stands for Ingress Protection, referring to its ability to withstand extreme weather
conditions.
What IP Rating Touchscreen LCD Monitor Will You Need?
If you don’t anticipate a harsh environment that is extremely dusty or wet then a lower IP rating would suffice.
In places that will have a lot of dust, debris, or potential to be in contact with any solids or liquids, you’ll want to make sure that the IP ratings are higher and that you have adequate water resistance on the touchscreen or LCD monitor solutions you utilize.
Examples of IP Ratings and Uses
Low IP ratings are appropriate for:
- Indoor use
- Protected use inside sealed products
- Inside sealed signage
- When using aluminum extrusions
High IP ratings are appropriate for:
- Unsealed outdoor locations
- Locations high in debris
- Areas with heavy foot traffic
- High splash areas
- High contact areas (people touching them)
- Wet locations
Is IP54 OK for rain? IP54 rated touchscreen monitors can be installed outdoors provided that the water resistant unit is integrated into a waterproof casing where the touchscreen will be housed permanently. The front of the touchscreen is rated IP54 and should be able to withstand
splashes of rain or water or dust with no issue at all. We recommend that the touchscreen be at least 1000NIT brightness, allowing the touchscreen to be readable under direct sunlight.
What does water resitant IP54 mean? IP54 means that the electronics encased within the bezel of the touchscreen is protected from limited dust ingress and is protected from water spray from any direction, it is water resistant.
Is IP54 rating waterproof? Xenarc Technologies label all IP54 touchscreen monitor solutions as water and dust resistant. The unit can tolerate water splashes and dust from the front of the unit. It is not recommended to submerge the touchscreen at any time. IP67 touchscreens can be submerged.
Can IP54 be used outside? IP54 Rated touchscreen monitor solutions can be used outside provided the touchscreen is 1000NIT of brightness so that it is readable and bright enough for direct sunlight.
Why do our Ingress Protection (IP) touchscreen monitor solutions outlast others in extreme conditions? Why do our rugged touchscreen and LCD monitors have a wider temperature range and a wider voltage input range? It is because our mission is to offer engineers, automators and system integrators the best products for any situation.
By utilizing high grade components, this display is perfect for industrial, in-car computing applications or any other applications where a small, durable, environmentally rugged display is required, including but not limited to:
